About this Course:

This course covers Chapter 3 and part of Chapter 4.

The third chapter starts with a powerful discussion on how to awaken the inner fire (kundalini) and the release of the chakra knots with the ten seals.

These seals, or mudras, are physical practices that use the inner winds to bring the mind up to the very edge of seeing emptiness itself. These practices overlap with the Diamond Way teachings with the foundation established in the previous two chapters.

Learn the meditation techniques such as the practice of sacred sounds (nada yoga). These lead us to a profound form of dissolution (laya) that is the gateway to seeing emptiness directly and the destruction of all negative thoughts and negative seeds.

About The Text:

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika describes the science and philosophy of Hatha Yoga:

+ asana (physical postures)
+ pranayama (breath and subtle energy)
+ shatkarma (cleansing)
+ mudra (subtle energetic connection)
+ bandha (energetic locks)
+ samadhi (perfect meditation)

These practices, when combined with deep understanding of how and why they work, help us to overcome the challenges and struggles that hold us back in our day-to-day life.

Written in the 15th century by Master Swatmarama, the text shows a path to its practitioners that will ultimately bring a sense of rich vitality, deep internal peace, and total personal fulfillment–not only for our own sake, but so that we can most powerfully help others.

About Your Instructors:

Master Teacher Michael Roach

Last time Geshe Michael taught this text, he said, "we don’t plan to teach it again. So I think if you like the subject, then I think it’s important to try learn the whole thing now while you can."

Don't miss this opportunity to miss a course!

Michael Roach is the first American to complete the “Geshe” degree after 25 years of study in India. At the same time, he helped found Andin International Diamond Corporation in New York City, where he used yogic principles to help it grow from a small investment to $250 million USD in annual sales. Andin was ultimately purchased in 2009 by super-investor Warren Buffet. Geshe Michael’s profits from the sale were used almost entirely to create and support several charitable organizations, one of which was an input project that has now digitized over 2 million pages of Asia's classic philosophical texts.

To translate the Hatha Yoga Pradipika authentically requires one to practice these teachings for many years. And this is best done in deep retreat.

It is from the experience gained from doing these practices in deep solitude that allowed Geshe Michael to translate this text authentically, experientially, like few masters before.

This is why YSI does yoga different.

Earle Birney

Earle has studied with the Yoga Studies Institute (YSI) since 2006 where he completed the five year curriculum covering the essential texts of yoga philosophy including the Yoga Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita as well as the Lady Niguma and Heart Yoga systems. He has studied with many great teachers in the Ashtanga, Bikram, Anusara, and Sivananda systems and is a 500 hr E-RYT. He has produced and taught at international retreats as well as completed a three year three month and three day silent meditation retreat.

At present Earle is living in New York where he teaches at the Three Jewels Outreach Center, develops curriculum for YSI, leads international youth retreats, and leads meditation and yoga teacher trainings.

Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson is a life-long student and practitioner of yoga. He has been a full-time instructor for over 20 years, teacher trainer since 2003, advanced teacher trainer since 2007 and now offers in-depth month long courses on Yoga, Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, Meditation, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Vinyāsa, Mantra and the 195-day practice Challenge.
