The Yoga Sutra is the essential text on yoga philosophy.
Written approximately 1800 years ago, its wisdom has proved timeless. In a world filled with distractions and social pressures, practitioners use this text as a clear guide on the path out of suffering, as a tool for mastering their mind, and as a clarifier for understanding the true nature of reality.
About the course
Learn the millennials-old teachings behind attaining the highest levels of focus and mental clarity.
Vibhuti pada, or the Chapter on Practice, is the third chapter of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and the very heart of yogic wisdom. This chapter presents the final three of the eight limbs of yogic practice as the three deep states of meditative concentration. When these three practices are combined into one “team”, sanyama in Sanskrit, they unlock the promise of Yoga's insight and power.
Of essential importance in this chapter is Master Patanjali’s coded references to the major elements of the subtle body - the winds, channels and drops. Given this map to the inner world, we arrive at realizations that are both rare and supreme.
In addition to Geshe Michael's teaching, YSI staff will lead daily meditations, yoga asana classes, and hold an in-depth study group. As well, the incomparable John Campbell will again lead us in Sanskrit classes.

Learn from Master Teacher Michael Roach
Michael Roach is the first American to complete the “Geshe” degree after 25 years of study in India. At the same time, he helped found Andin International Diamond Corporation in New York City, where he used yogic principles to help it grow from a small investment to $250 million USD in annual sales. Andin was ultimately purchased in 2009 by super-investor Warren Buffet. Geshe Michael’s profits from the sale were used almost entirely to create and support several charitable organizations, one of which was an input project that has now digitized over 2 million pages of Asia's classic philosophical texts.
Get the essence of the essence of the most essential text in yoga philosophy.
Michael has tirelessly studied and translated the great ideas of yogic philosophy for over 50 years. A master of both Sanskrit and Tibetan, he uses the 100,000+ books in the ALL textual database to ensure the accuracy of his translations. This truly unique translation project of the Yoga Sutra was completed from within the depth and clarity of his 3 year 3 month 3 day silent meditation retreat. This is why YSI does yoga different.

Why learn with the Yoga Studies Institute?
We do yoga different. If you've taken our other courses and classes, then you already know that! When practice is based in original yogic wisdom, it just feels different.
We source our material from over 2 million pages of classic Asian texts which have been preserved and digitized by our partners at the Asian Legacy Library. Together, our teams have taken painstaking measures to translate, understand, and apply the original yogic texts so that we could share them with you in the most clear and easy-to-apply ways.
Having a lineage of authentic wisdom is important. But we believe this information needs to be integrated through years of practice and meditative contemplation. Many of our instructors have completed over 1000 days of silent meditation retreat practicing yoga and synthesizing this knowledge into experiential wisdom.
